The inspiration for Oswego County’s new Emerging Artist Program grew out of both experience and observation – of what it takes to build an artistic practice, and how often that path is navigated in isolation.
As working artists and part of a cooperative model (Riverside Artisans), we have seen firsthand the value of shared knowledge, encouragement , and opportunity. At the same time, it has become clear that many emerging artists lack access to these same supports. Talent alone is rarely enough; artists need guidance, visibility, and a sense of belonging within a creative community. This program was created to help bridge that gap.
By partnering with a non-profit art association (Art Association of Oswego), we were able to apply for and receive a grant from the Shineman Foundation for our pilot program. In addition, we are intentionally bringing together two complementary strengths: the professional market-facing experience of working artists, and the community-centered, educational mission of the broader arts network. Together, we aim to create a more complete support system – one that nurtures both artistic growth and practical sustainability.
Ultimately, this program is rooted in a simple belief – that artists thrive when they are seen, supported, and invited into meaningful dialogue. By investing in emerging artists today, we are strengthening the future of our creative community as a whole.
