What is an emerging artist?

The definition an emerging artist according to the developers of this program is as follows:
An emerging artist is any artist who is actively developing their practice and seeking to grow professionally, regardless of age or background. This may be those new to exhibiting, transitioning into a more serious practice, or returning to art after time off (late starters, self-taught artists, or re-entering artists after a break). The individual should be willing to devote the time and effort to develop artistically.

If you are still building your portfolio, gaining exhibition experience, or working toward greater visibility, you likely qualify. We encourage you to apply.

Is there an application fee?

No, there is no cost to apply.

What is the application deadline?

The application opens on May 15, 2026, and closes for applications on May 31, 2026 at 11:59 pm.

How are artists selected?

The selection committee consists of members of Riverside Artisans, Art Association of Oswego, and community members selected by the two organizations. They will review all applications and possibly ask the top applicants to bring their work to view personally.

How long does the program last?

One year in duration.

Do I need to want to become a professional artist?

No.

What artistic disciplines are eligible?

All visual arts, no performance or music.

How much is the stipend?

$750.00 dispersed over the year.

Do I need to produce new work during the program?

Yes, you will be expected to continue to build your body of work in preparation for exhibitions provided toward the end of the year.
